Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather decides to quit
Boxing’s unofficial pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. has decided to hang his boots at the age of 31.
The Olympic bronze medalist stunned rivals and fans with his sudden decision to say goodbye to the profession which was his passion for last many years.
Mayweather had last fought in December when he beat Ricky Hatton and was expected to challenge Oscar De La Hoya in a rematch in September, which would have gone as the richest fight in the history of boxing.
Explaining about reasons for his sudden decision, in a letter addressed to media members, Mayweather states that it was very difficult to announce retirement from boxing which was his passion since childhood. But the past few extremely difficult years took away the joy and desire from him to continue in the sport. He adds that he loved competing and winning and would have continued career in boxing for the sake of his fans who supported him and enjoyed his fights.
Bob Arum, Mayweather’s long time promoter, described his decision as rationally correct. He suggested that Mayweather needs to be commended for what he did to sports all these years. He is retiring at the height of his boxing career.
Mayweather says, a time comes when money does not matter, and he has found peace with his decision which he could not get in a long time.
