It's a make-or-break situation for Fabricio Werdum

Carlos Newton

Carlos Newton

Carlos Newton is a Canadian mixed martial arts fighter. He fights as well as teaches at Warrior Martial Arts Centre in Newmarket, Ontorio. Coached and mentored by Terry Riggs, he has competed in many a tournament, especially UFC & Pride FC. He also happens to coach the Toronto Dragons of the International Fight League.
Nicknamed The Ronin, a reflection of both his training methods and his interest in the martial culture of feudal Japan, Carlos Newton was born on 17 August, 1976 in British Virgin Island.

Standing at a height of 5’9” and weighing 82kg he presently fights out of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. His fighting style is Dragon ball Jiu-Jitsu,  an amalgam of traditional fighting styles of jiu-jitsu, judo, and wrestling. Dragon in the name is in tribute to Dragon Ball, a Japanese comic and anime series. He is associated with Warrior MMA Fight Team. His MMA track record is 13wins- 1 (T)KOs (7.69%), 9 Submissions (69.23%) & 3 Decisions (23.08%) and 12 losses- 3 (T)KOs (25.00%), 3 Submissions (25.00%) & 6 Decisions (50.00%).

But for the serious MMA followers, Newton goes beyond facts and figures. His graceful yet intelligent fighting style holds him in high esteem of his fans. The fact that he speaks Japanese fluently only adds to his charm. His fighting acumen and spirit drives its energy and much more from classical martial art texts like The Book of Five Rings, The Art of War. However, he isn’t only classical in his approach and mindset, for Star Wars and the Dragon Ball are his inspirations also. Muhammed Ali, Einstein, Milton and Batman are his heroes. Perhaps a mere glance at his heroes is enough to suggest that he is not all physical muscles only; he also heads a sound educated mind and is not oblivious to other facets of life. Education is not his weak spot; rather it is his strength. A former linguistics student at Toronto's York University, he is in the latter stages of his pre-med studies in geriatric medicine, having done research at Baycrest Hospital, one of the world leaders in geriatric care.

He began to fight professionally at the tender age of 19. In June of 1998, Newton lost to Kazuki Sakuraba technically in Pride Fighting Championship but the contest was such that even today it is remembered as a classic. However, his greatest accomplishment has been his winning the UFC Welterweight Championship from Pat Miletich in May2001.
