Before leaving the organization he defended his title two more times against Dennis Hallman and B. J. Penn.
Pulver left the organization due to the contractual problems. Jens had become very famous for his combination of defensive wrestling and boxing strategy, which is called sprawl and brawl in the MMA circles. He was also famous for the extreme power in his left catch, which has knocked out many opponents with a single left punch. Pulver’s first little defense was against Dennis Hallman. Hallman was best known for his two wins both by submission under 1 minute, which was against the former UFC welterweight, champion Matt Hughes.

Penn was the first non-Brazilian who won the world title at the Black Belt level in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. After leaving the UFC and having two losses in a row Pulver’s career drooped slightly. He then tried hard and regained his winning ways by dropping down a weight class to 145 pounds. At the same time he also began competing as a professional boxer and won all the four fights in 2004, which included the fight held on the national syndicated USA network.
Pulver again returned to the UFC, as a newly return lightweight division. He was matched up against the UFC newcomer, Joe Lauzon. Pulver was a 7-to-1 and was about to win the match, but Lauzon immediately defeated him by knockout at the 48 second of the first round. When the fight ended, Pulver apologized to everyone for his performance and stated that he still preferred to make his UFC comeback.
