Renato Sobral is a Brazilian based mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, born in Rio de Janeiro on September 07, 1975. This 185 cm tall and 93 kg weight fighter is a member of the Gracie Barra Combat Team, and holds an impressive fighting record under his name. Majority of Sobral’s wins have come by means of submission, wherein some of his noteworthy accomplishments cover wins over well-known fighters from this sporting industry.

Renato Sobral has successfully handed defeats to famous fighters like Jeremy Horn, Mauricio Rua, and Trevor Prangley in a sole night at International Fighting Championship’s (IFC’s) Global Domination tournament. Moreover, Sobral has also gained success over famous Japanese fighters Kiyoshi Tamura and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka.

Before stepping into the Gracie Barra Combat Team, Renato Sobral underwent qualified in Ruas Vale Tudo, a renowned martial arts fighting system that was developed by the celebrated Marco Ruas.

Renato Sobral is well known across the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) for his severe and arduous training schedule, which basically comprises of activities like steep Brazilian mountain running, bench-pressing fellow workout associates, and covering 200 meters per hour through swimming.

With special skills in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighting style, Renato Sobral’s nickname – Babalu, originated from his habit of chewing the specific bubblegum brand.

In his international MMA career, Renato Sobral has also been placed on the losing side at UFC 62, by Chuck Liddell, for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship title. The match was ended when Liddell gained victory through a technical knockout at 95 seconds, in the first round of the competition itself. Thereafter, Sobral was again knocked out by Jason Lambert in the second round at UFC 68.

However, it was just recently on June 22, 2007 that Renato Sobral conquered the match against ex-UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir. This success came to Sobral by way of a special submission grappling super fight that took place at Tuff-n-Uff’s ‘Unarmed Combat’ fighting event.

On personal front, Renato Sobral has a daughter Maria Fernanda, whose name has been placed as a tattoo on Sobral’s chest.
